Governance and operations

L'INAO is characterized by a dual governance system that brings together public authorities and over 200 professionals within its governing bodies.

The workings of INAO's governing bodies

The Permanent Council, the institution's steering body, defines strategic orientations and decides on the Institute's budget. This original construction of dialogue is based on the desire to reach a consensus in the service of the general interest.

The 5 national committees approve the specifications and their modifications :

  • Comité national des appellations d'origine relatives aux vins et aux boissons alcoolisées, et des boissons spiritueuses
  • Comité national des appellations d'origine laitières, agroalimentaires et forestières
  • Comité national des IGP, STG et labels rouges
  • Comité national des IGP vins et cidres
  • Comité national de l'Agriculture Biologique

The Conseil des agréments et contrôles approves control arrangements.

The Institute's activity is structured by the sessions of its national bodies, which bring together professionals involved in official signs of quality and origin, qualified personalities (including consumers, researchers and environmental protection associations), and representatives of the administrations concerned.

The presidents and members of the national bodies are appointed by ministerial decree for a five-year term.

The governance of the INAO offers a large place to the professional, technical and legal expertise of the dossiers.

In addition, the expertise of the Institute's departments is very often required for the drafting of texts and the body of regulations that may have an impact on agricultural production under SIQO, but also on the information given to consumers.
