International cooperation
INAO is developing cooperative actions to promote the French official signs identifying quality and origin (SIQO) and promote the opportunity represented by geographical indications at international level. This mission relies on a network of experts coordinated by INAO's legal and international department.

SIQO represent an appropriate response to the agricultural objectives of many countries. Indeed, this agricultural and agri-food policy offers interesting economic, territorial and social spin-offs.
Sharing experience and educating people about the principles of French SIQO policy is also an effective way of defending our own quality products, particularly geographical indications, and bringing these concepts into the international debate. Recognition of the geographical indication concept by as many people as possible thus ensures an effective fight against usurpations of all kinds.
International cooperation therefore aims to promote the geographical indication concept, and to define common bases of understanding for their operation and protection.
Our missions
- Contribute to defending the commercial interests of French products under SIQO
- Accompany third countries wishing to create or develop their own system, in coordination with other institutional partners
- Strengthen the recognition of SIQO at international level.
The different types of cooperation offered by INAO
The actions implemented by INAO concern many countries all over the world. They take different forms, depending on the expectations of the countries concerned:
- Hosting foreign delegations
- Presenting and visiting different national GI sectors
- Participating in seminars, conferences and other events abroad
- Technical cooperation
- Taking charge of cooperation actions...
The actions carried out are part of the influence strategy of the ministry in charge of Agriculture. They also respond to the guidelines defined by the INAO: working with countries where cases of counterfeiting are detected, or countries with alliance potential within the framework of negotiations.
