The INAO at the 46th World Congress on Vines and Wine, organized by the OIV
Representatives from the INAO were part of the French delegation to the 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine, organized by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) from June 16 to 20 in Chișinău, Republic of Moldova.
The purpose of this scientific conference is to develop standards and to advise and inform all stakeholders in the global wine and viticulture sector. Once again this year, the OIV brought together more than 300 experts from 51 countries who were able to discuss contemporary issues facing the global wine industry: sustainability, climate change, winemaking practices...
This edition marked the beginning of a new century of action for the OIV and was held for the first time in Moldova.
The country, an OIV member since 2001, has carved out a place for itself in the international wine world by ranking among the top 20 wine producers globally and is the world’s 14th-largest exporter. Its success is largely due to its natural resources, its winemaking traditions—including several indigenous grape varieties—and the improvement of production techniques over the years.
A forum for developing international wine standards
Indeed, faced with major challenges such as climate change, shifting consumption patterns, and global economic pressures, the wine and viticulture sector is reinventing itself to revitalize global wine production and consumption.
Several key areas are therefore being explored:
• Technical innovation
• Understanding consumer expectations
• Environmental responsibility
• Adapting practices in response to climate change
Sustainability issues were at the heart of the discussions
OIV Director John Barker thus called for strengthening cooperation, promote science, and support collaborative approaches to address common challenges and seize future opportunities in the wine sector.

The International Organization of Vine and Wine, currently headquartered in Dijon, France, is an international organization founded in Paris in 1924, originally by the governments of Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Tunisia. It now comprises 51 member states from every continent, representing producers and/or consumers of vine products (wines, table grapes, raisins), 16 observers, and more than 500 experts.
Its objective is to provide grape- and wine-producing and consuming countries with information to help establish standards and regulations for vine products, minimize trade barriers, promote sustainable production and protect consumers, as well as harmonize international practices and standards specific to this sector.
Each year, OIV Congresses focus on four major themes:
- Viticulture and table grapes
- Oenology and analytical methods
- Law and economics of the vine and wine
- Consumer health and safety
