The wine industry presents its strategy for adapting to climate change to the minister

Jérôme DESPEY, Christian PALY and Eric PAUL, Bernard ANGELRAS, presidents of FranceAgriMer's Specialized Council, the INAO's PDO and PGI National Committees, and the Institut Français de la Vigne et du Vin, presented the wine industry's strategy for adapting to climate change to Julien DENORMANDIE, Minister of Agriculture and Food, this morning.

The work undertaken in 2017 was based on INRAE's LACCAVE meta-program, presented by its Chairman and CEO Philippe MAUGUIN, and on contributions from over 600 field players representing all winegrowing basins in a "participatory science" approach.

The aim is to enable, through innovation, the value, specificity and diversity of winegrowing regions, PDOs and PGIs to be safeguarded.

7 areas with 40 priority actions have been selected:

  • improving knowledge of winegrowing areas
  • acting on production conditions
  • favoring adapted plant material
  • acting on oenological practices
  • following market developments and guaranteeing production
  • strengthening research, development, transfer and training,
  • contributing to climate change mitigation.

The Minister praised the sense of responsibility and collective mobilization of the industry's players in the face of a major challenge, and insisted, like the presidents, on the need for all available tools (fundamental and applied research, regulatory and financial tools) to be mobilized in the implementation of this strategy. It must be fully in line with the Varenne agricole de l'eau et du changement climatique, launched on May 28.
