- 1953 : creation of appellations d'origine fromagères

- Loi du 2 juillet 1990: extension des missions de l'INAO aux produits agroalimentaires, l'INAO devient " Institut national des appellations d'origine "
- 1992 : creation of PDOs, PGIs and TSGs for agri-food products within European regulations
- 1999: extension of INAO missions to agri-food PGIs
- 2006: creation of the Institut national de l'origine et de la qualité, extension of missions to Label Rouge and Organic Farming. The institute retains the acronym "INAO"
