INAO partner of the international conference dedicated to global perspectives on geographical indications
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD) are organizing an international conference entitled "Global Perspectives on Geographical Indications" at Montpellier Agropolis, from July 5 to 8. INAO is a partner of this conference.

This major event will bring together 150 researchers, national and regional public authorities, producers and international development organizations to debate current international issues concerning geographical indications (GIs) worldwide.
While the recognition of new GIs has multiplied in many countries over the last two decades, the Geneva Agreement - which revitalized and renewed the international system of GI registration and protection within WIPO - has recently entered into force, and free trade agreements including GI provisions have multiplied, this symposium proposes to draw lessons from implemented experiences and to offer, through exchanges, new perspectives and sources of inspiration.
Field visits will highlight GIs from the Occitanie region: IGP Vins de Pays d'Oc, AOP Oignon doux des Cévennes, AOP Taureau de Camargue.
Exploring the wide diversity of GI issues
In order to highlight the dynamism of GIs and enable the various players to understand their many dimensions, the conference will cover a wide range of topics: nature and legal definition, public and private management, consumer welfare, sustainable development, including social dimensions and protection of biodiversity and the environment, competition policies, technical innovation and terroir effect, participation and empowerment of local stakeholders...
