A new Label Rouge for the yellow Charentais type "Melon" (n°LA06/23) [ODG].

The "Melon" has just been recognized as a Label Rouge following the publication of its approval order by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty and the Ministry of the Economy, on October 21, 2023. This is the second melon to be awarded Label Rouge status, its superior quality having been demonstrated by sensory analysis, in comparison with a so-called "standard" melon.

A firm, juicy, sweet melon

A yellow Charentais type, Label Rouge Melon n° LA 06/23 has very sweet orange flesh. With a minimum weight of 600g, it is characterized by a green, cream or yellow rind. The fruit is harvested when ripe, over a period of 4 weeks. The sugar content is controlled to a minimum of 13° Brix. Measurements are taken on a sample of each batch of melon. The stalk, less than 2cm long, is preserved during picking. Melons are packaged by size, and sold fresh and whole by the unit, or in single-layer trays.

A superior-quality melon, sustainably produced

The melon benefits from gustatory qualities that meet the criteria for superior quality. Its aromatic intensity comes from a meticulous selection of varieties, based on agronomic trials, physico-chemical and sensory analyses. A minimum crop rotation of 5 years after one year of melon cultivation is imposed by the specifications. In this way, soil fertility is preserved, and the impact of production on natural resources is reduced, by limiting fertilization, water inputs and phytosanitary treatments. The time between picking and shipping is reduced to a maximum of 2 days, to preserve the freshness of the melon and its organoleptic qualities.

A committed industry

Currently, the industry brings together producers based mainly in the south of Vendée. All operators, both producers and shippers, are independent. The project is led by Vendée Qualité, a multi-channel defense and management organization, which manages over 40 SIQO products (mainly Label Rouge). The "melon" section was created in 2019.
