IP Key: an Asian delegation discovers Centre-Est's GI sectors [ODG].
As part of the IP Key project run by the European Commission, INAO welcomed a delegation from Southeast Asia from July 7 to 9, 2023. In addition to discovering the French geographical indication (GI) sectors and their specific organization, this meeting was an opportunity to promote the European concept of GIs.

IP Key, a platform for international cooperation around GIs
The European Commission aims to improve the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights in third countries by implementing actions in China, Latin America and Southeast Asia under the European Union (EU) Partnership Instrument. IP Key initiatives are designed to create a platform for cooperation and act as a bridge between the EU and its partners in the creation of an international IP landscape. The scheme is reinforced by the support of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). An IP Key project for countries in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) zone was also set up in conjunction with this study visit. It was also envisaged alongside the WIPO General Assembly in July 2023.
International intellectual property institutes mobilized
Many Southeast Asian countries were represented: Cambodia (Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce, Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the WTO and Other), Indonesia (Directorate General of Intellectual Property), Laos (Department of Intellectual PropertyMinistry of Industry and Commerce), Malaysia (Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia), Philippines (Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines), Singapore (Intellectual Property Office of Singapore), Thailand (Department of Intellectual Property), Viet Nam (Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam). The delegation was accompanied by representatives from the EUIPO and the European Commission's DG Agri.
Visits to discover GI sectors
The INAO's Centre-Est delegation organized visits to various defense and management organizations (ODGs) and operators in central-eastern France, close to the Swiss border. On the program:
- Visit to a farm and a dairy producing AOP "Abondance"
- Meeting with winegrowers and visit to a vineyard in AOP "Savoie"
- Discovery of maturing cellars for AOP Comté.
Participants were able to gain a better understanding of how ODGs work, the link between internal and external control of specifications and products, and the issues involved in protecting the denominations of the GIs visited.
INAO mobilized to promote the concept of geographical indication
As part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty's strategy of influence, INAO is developing cooperative actions to highlight the French system of official signs of identification of quality and origin (SIQO) and promote the opportunity represented by geographical indications at international level. In particular, this mission makes it possible to:
- Contribute to defending the commercial interests of French products under SIQO
- Accompany third countries wishing to create or develop their own system
- Consolidate the recognition of SIQO at international level.
