How to obtain recognition for a product with an official quality and origin label?
You are interested in the official signs of identification of quality and origin (SIQO) and would like to initiate a process to have a product recognized. This page presents the recognition process for each sign.
Create a collective with other producers or processors
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, the SIQO process is a collective one. You must join forces with other operators to form a defense and management organization, and together analyze the viability of your project. You must then draw up a set of specifications.
Choosing the right SIQO for your project
There are 5 official signs of quality and origin: Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG), Label Rouge and Organic Farming. The choice of which SIQO to claim depends on your thoughts on the product, notably its characteristics to be highlighted or its production and/or elaboration method, but also the scope of protection sought by the product, which varies according to the SIQO.

To note: the same product can be promoted by several SIQO:
Organic Agriculture is a sign of quality compatible with all other signs
Label Rouge is compatible with the agri-food PGI as well as with the TSG
Start processing your application
Investigation procedures differ according to the SIQO claimed and the sector concerned. The process involves several stages at national level, then, for European SIQO (PDO, PGI, TSG), registration by the European Commission. This process can take several years.

Please note: the INAO examines the application free of charge, but the preparation of the application by the applicant, i.e. the future defense and management organization, can generate costs (economic and technical study, drafting, etc.). Production under SIQO also entails payment of an INAO fee and inspection costs.
