A look back at the February 12, 2026 meeting of the Comité national des appellations d'origine Vins et boissons alcoolisées.
The Comité national des appellations d'origine relatives aux vins et aux boissons alcoolisées, et des boissons spiritueuses met on February 12, 2026 to examine a range of strategic issues for the future of appellations d'origine, in a context marked by adaptation to climate change, changing societal expectations and the necessary consolidation of the hierarchy of quality signs.
A new appellation d'origine is born: "Montpeyroux"
The culmination of work undertaken over several years as part of the process of prioritizing the Languedoc regional appellation, this dossier will be forwarded after approval to the European Commission.
Adapting practices and environmental transition
The National Committee continued its work on the evolution of specifications to enable appellations d'origine to adapt to climatic and agronomic challenges.
Several requests for the introduction of Varieties of Interest for Adaptation (VIFA) were examined, notably for the PDOs: Coteaux Varois en Provence, Château-Chalon, Pessac-Léognan as well as several appellations in the Rhône Valley.
These changes aim to:
- strengthen resilience in the face of climate change,
- limit the use of inputs,
- preserve the typicality of wines,
- accompany regional dynamics of supervised innovation.
The Committee also examined various requests to introduce or update agro-environmental provisions in several appellations.
Extensions to new colors
The National Committee has studied requests to extend appellations to a new color (white wines), in particular validating it for AOP Vinsobres.
These requests, supported by elements of anteriority, territorial coherence and adapted production rules, are part of a logic of valorization and diversification of terroirs.
Delimitation and prioritization work
Important delimitation dossiers were examined, including:
- The revision of the parcel area of the Picpoul de Pinet PDO,
- The continuation of hierarchical work for the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine PDO (DGC Goulaine, Monnières-Saint-Fiacre, Château-Thébaud and Mouzillon-Tillières),
- The definitive delimitation of the Ladoix PDO.
This work reflects the Committee's ongoing commitment to ensuring the coherence, legibility and credibility of the hierarchy of appellations.
Planting density: launch of a national working group
Faced with recurring requests for changes to planting density rules, the Permanent Commission has decided to set up a dedicated working group. In a context marked by climate change, water constraints, economic issues and the diversity of terroirs.
This group's mission will be to analyze the links between density, yield and leaf area, quality, typicity of appellation wines and to propose, where appropriate, updated national guidelines.
.
National opposition procedures (PNO)
Several draft amendments to specifications were examined with a view to launching or closing national opposition procedures, prior to their approval and transmission to the European Commission, such as the "Château-Chalon" PDO, "Pessac-Léognan" PDO, "Bordeaux" PDO.
A dynamic of adapting and securing appellations
The decisions and guidelines adopted at this meeting illustrate the National Committee's commitment to supporting the industry as it adapts to new climatic, economic and regulatory challenges, while guaranteeing the protection and enhancement of appellations of origin.
