This list has now been sent for approval to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty and the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty.
The classification of AOC "Saint-Émilion grand cru" wines, provided for in the appellation's specifications, has existed since 1955, and is revisable every ten years. The most recent classification, dating from 2012, established 18 "premiers grands crus classés" and 64 "grands crus classés".
The classification process is entrusted in the AOC specifications to the INAO, which for this purpose set up a seven-member classification commission by decision of the national committee at its meeting on June 16, 2020. In addition, the regulations concerning the classification of the "premiers grands crus classés" and "grands crus classés" of the "Saint-Émilion grand cru" appellation d'origine contrôlée were approved by decree on May 14, 2020.
The classification regulations provide for candidates to be graded on the basis of four criteria, the elements of analysis and weighting of which differ according to the appellation claimed.
The first criterion relates to the quality and consistency of the wines assessed by tasting samples. The main criterion, it accounts for 50% of the final score, whatever the classification level. The second criterion concerns a study of the winery's reputation. The third criterion relates to the characterization of the farm, assessed in particular on the basis of the land base.
The work carried out by the classification commission over a period of almost two years was supported by an independent third-party organization, Bureau Veritas Certification France, appointed via a public contract, and by the INAO.
