Vitilience: A Look Back at the Second Edition of the Climatour Provence
During the Brignoles Fair on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the Climat Tour brought together approximately 80 professionals from the wine industry, united by a common goal: to anticipate and adapt to the impacts of climate change on Provençal vineyards. The INAO, a partner of Vitilience, participated in this event.
The packed program combined scientific expertise, feedback from the field, technical innovations, and collective perspectives, illustrating the momentum generated by the industry. The morning began with remarks by Jean-Jacques Breban, President of the Centre du Rosé, and Éric Paul, President of IGP Var and Chair of the INAO’s National Committee responsible for wine-related GI Ps. Together, they emphasized the importance of regional and cross-industry collaboration to support winegrowers through this necessary transition.
Presentations by various researchers from the French Institute of Vine and Wine (IFV), INRAE, AgroParisTech, and the Rosé Center helped shed light on the impacts of climate change by 2050 on viticulture in Provence, as well as the approaches being explored at various scales and tested within the Provençal demonstration projects.
Presentations:
- Projected Impacts of Climate Change - Viticulture in Provence by 2050 by Martin Pardon, Research Engineer at INRAE at the EGFV Joint Research Unit (INRAE)
- A network of innovative demonstration sites and regional outreach for greater climate resilience in French vineyards by Audrey Dubois, Project Manager for VITILIENCE and PNDV (IFV/CNIV)
- Overview of water resilience through the lens of available water reserves and root systems by Fabien Leduc, Terroir Studies and Agronomic Expertise (Emmanuel Gagnepain Consultants Terroirist)
- An Academic Perspective on Regenerative Hydrology by Jean Stéphane Bailly, Prof. AgroParisTech, UMR LISA
- Varietal Innovation: Addressing Which Challenges by Laurent Audeguin, Director of Research and Innovation, Plant Material Division (IFV)
- Rosé Wines and Climate Change: What oenological tools can preserve freshness and balance? Grégori Lanza, Agricultural Engineer and Oenology Project Manager (Rosé Center)
- Presentation of the ADAM demonstrator by Tyfaine Bouric, Agricultural Engineer, Wine Project Manager (IFV)
These presentations concluded with remarks by Sylvain Reverchon, deputy director of the INAO, who emphasized the importance of this work and of this type of gathering—which combines scientific, technical, and professional approaches, to enable the management bodies of Provençal wine AOPs and IGPs and the operators in these sectors to have the necessary tools to address new contemporary challenges.
The event was followed by tastings of the methods tested within the ADAM demonstration facility, involving all project partners: wines made from new grape varieties and evolving winemaking practices designed to preserve the wines’ characteristics in the context of climate change.
About Vitilience and the Climate Tour
The Vitilience project aims to create a network of 20 innovative demonstration sites across 12 wine-growing regions to improve the resilience of French vineyards in the face of climate change. The initiative includes organizing events throughout France—the “Climat Tours”—which allow local operators to actively participate in discussions and share their insights on strategies for adapting to climate change and new societal expectations. The program features participatory workshops, tastings, and field visits…
