A publication on the dynamics of the SIQO economy between 2013 and 2023
INAO has just published an analysis of the economic dynamics of official signs of identification of origin and quality (SIQO) between 2013 and 2023. This summary document traces a decade of evolution and presents the general dynamics, as well as by sector, confirming the important place of SIQO in French agriculture.
Globally, a decade of growth
Throughout the decade, SIQO products (excluding organic) experienced global growth in sales.
As far as agri-food chains are concerned, they are experiencing marked growth. This growth is being driven in particular by PDO agri-foods, which, among the agri-food sectors, represent the highest sales for a smaller number of products. Agri-food PGIs, on the other hand, saw a boost in the middle of the decade, thanks to a large number of new product registrations between 2016 and 2019.
As regards wine and spirits products under SIQO, the sectors also show overall growth in sales from 2013 to 2021. However, the situation deteriorates from 2021 onwards.
A less favorable context and heterogeneous situations from 2022
2022 and 2023, however, marked a slowdown in this trend, against a backdrop of generalized inflation.
Most agri-food sectors saw a decline in sales, although butcher's meats and dairy products began to recover from 2023.
Wine and spirits products were affected by a downward trend in consumption, from 2022 and 2023 respectively for AOC-IG spirits and still wine AOPs. However, the wine and spirits industries have maintained sales growth, thanks to an improvement in the value-added of these products, which has helped to offset the drop in volumes marketed.
Production under SIQO has also been affected by exogenous events impacting production dynamics, such as extreme climatic events, or health crises. For example, fat palmipeds and poultry, as well as the olive and oyster industries, have experienced major production variability over the 2013-2023 period.
SIQO: a major part of French agriculture
Thus, despite an inflationary context, volatile markets, and intra-sector issues, SIQO products continue to represent 40% of French agriculture sales. This very high share demonstrates the importance of these products and the sustainability of their place in the French agricultural landscape.
