Winegrowing: agri-environmental measures now included in CVI planted area calculations [ODG].

Following a collective effort involving INAO, DGDDI, FranceAgriMer, DGPE and professional organizations, a new DGDDI circular has just been published to formalize a new doctrine for managing the area planted with vines on the CVI eligible for production. It formalizes the inclusion of agri-environmental measures in viticulture in the calculation methods.

The computerized vineyard register (CVI) is a compulsory tool for European Union member states. It contains information on winegrowing companies, plots of land planted or grubbed up, and production and stock levels. The information is shared by partner administrations and wine industry professionals.

Without affecting the level of consumption of planting authorization, the circular integrates agro-environmental measures in viticulture, such as "High Environmental Value" (HVE) certification and agroforestry, for the calculation of planted area. Thus, in order to facilitate the development of agro-forestry, trees and hedges can be taken into account in the area eligible for wine production, subject to compliance with certain conditions: 20 isolated trees per hectare, 40 aligned trees per hectare, 15% of the total area of the plot occupied by hedges... The precise terms and conditions, such as the distance between rows of trees or the flat-rate width of hedges, are set out in this circular published on June 28, 2024 by the DGDDI.
