International cooperation: exchanges with Côte d'Ivoire
A French delegation comprising INAO, INPI, CIRAD and Certipaq took part in an international symposium on geographical indications (GIs) in Côte d'Ivoire, from December 16 to 18, 2024. These actions are part of the international cooperation set up since 2017 to promote the GI system among African states (PAMPIG).
Organized by the Ivorian Intellectual Property Office (OIPI), the Journées Ivoiriennes de la Propriété Intellectuelle et de l'Innovation (JIIP21) 2024 focused on the theme:"GI labeling, a tool for promoting local products, preserving biological and cultural Diversity, and a powerful lever for local development".
A large number of panellists attended the event. The challenges of structuring value chains were highlighted through the sharing of several experiences from Cameroon, Senegal, Guinea, Morocco and France.
Contemporary topics related to sustainability issues were also the subject of lively exchanges.
These countries are aware of the value of GIs, and are also moving towards developing tourism around recognized local products.
Côte d'Ivoire, a country committed to geographical indications
Côte d'Ivoire is a member of the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI). OAPI joined the Geneva Act, which sets up the international system for the protection of GIs, in 2022. INAO has supported the recognition of Ivorian GIs, and assisted the industry in the registration of their products. The aim is to enhance and promote traditional African products.
The final day of the symposium was devoted to a visit to a group of women producers of attiéké des Lagunes in Dabou, illustrating the concrete impact of GIs on local communities and the valorization of traditional know-how.
The French delegation also visited a village of weavers north of Yamoussokro to discover the manufacture of Baoulé pagne, registered as a PGI in Côte d'Ivoire.
