INAO at the 45th World Vine and Wine Congress in Dijon to share the wine industry's strategy for adapting to climate change [ODG].
From October 14 to 18, 2024 in Dijon, France hosts the 45th edition of the World Congress of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). The event is an opportunity to celebrate the centenary of this important international institution also known as the "UN of wine", which brings together over 500 experts in the sector from 50 countries. INAO is naturally present at this major event, alongside the French wine industry.

The creation of the OIV dates back to 1924 in Paris, against the backdrop of an international wine crisis linked to the proliferation of Phylloxera, a parasitic vine aphid. 100 years on, the wine industry is also at a turning point in its history. It is facing major challenges: market uncertainties and upheavals, climate change, changing societal expectations. The Congress looks back over the 100 years of activity of the OIV, which has made a major contribution to standardizing wine-making practices, and looks ahead to the future of the industry. The theme chosen for this event, "vine and wine, an innovative heritage facing the challenges of the century", highlights the excellence of the wine industry, rooted in the territories and testimony to a multi-secular cultural heritage, but also its capacity for innovation to meet the contemporary challenges it faces.
The event is also an opportunity to inaugurate the OIV's new head office, located in the Hôtel Bouchu d'Esterno, a historic building in the city of Dijon built in the 17th century.
France presents its strategy to ensure the sustainability of the national wine industry in a context of climate change
In this context, INAO and the Institut français de la vigne et du vin (IFV) will be presenting the national industry's strategy in the face of climate change to vine and wine experts, researchers and scientists. The winegrowing and winemaking sector is structuring itself, committing itself and innovating through various levers in the face of climate change: experimentation, regulation, transfer and investment support. This momentum and the strength of the collective are bringing concrete advances for the French industry, and can be a source of inspiration for other member states.
The INAO took advantage of the event to meet with a Mexican delegation, which enabled progress to be made on the framework for cooperation between France and Mexico in terms of geographical indications and vine plants.

Member states renew their commitment to the OIV for viticulture.
Ahead of the Congress, France organized a ministerial conference from October 11 to 13, 2024, chaired by Madame Annie Genevard, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, to reaffirm its attachment to the OIV and the importance it attaches to the wine sector. The meeting provided an opportunity for ministers to discuss the global wine situation and the challenges facing the industry. They adopted a joint declaration recognizing the work accomplished by the OIV since its creation, and outlining its prospects for the years ahead. Several objectives are particularly highlighted in this declaration:
- Promote the sustainability of the sector in its three economic, social and environmental components;
- Promote the world heritage of vines and wine and its historical, cultural, human, social and environmental aspects ;
- Stress the role of the OIV in informing public health decisions, particularly with a view to combating excessive alcohol consumption;
- Contribute to the dissemination and promotion of the OIV's work at the various decision-making levels - national, regional and international.
