A technical seminar on the sustainability of Provence wines

The INAO participated in the technical seminar organized on January 13 by the three Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) of Provence: Côtes de Provence, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, and Coteaux Varois en Provence. The event, titled “Let’s Be the Change,” focused on the impact of climate change on viticulture and winemaking, as well as the implementation of the Provence Wine Climate Plan.

How can we adapt PDOs and practices to address climate change?

The event brought together about fifteen renowned experts. The program alternated between roundtable discussions, workshops, and updates on the experiments launched three years ago as part of the Provence Wines Climate Plan. More than 250 participants gathered for an event rich in discussion, covering a variety of topics: the future of PDOs, vineyard longevity, vine architecture and canopy management, strategies for addressing water stress, soil health, and agroecological economic models…

A Roundtable Discussion on the Future of AOC

As part of a roundtable discussion titled “The AOC of Tomorrow?,” Carole Ly, director of the INAO, Éric Pastorino, president of the Côtes de Provence Wine Growers’ Association, and Ronan Raffray, director of the Master’s program in Vine and Wine Law at the University of Bordeaux, discussed the future of AOPs, the conditions for their sustainability, and the tools available to winegrowers and wine-growing organizations (ODGs). This was an opportunity to present the initiatives put in place to facilitate experimentation within the AOPs (DEI, VIFA, etc.) and to discuss the sustainability of the wine sectors. Efforts to improve the institution’s efficiency—particularly to update the specifications without weakening them—were also discussed.
