This agreement is the result of a dialogue that began at the 43rd OIV World Congress on Vines and Wine in Ensenada in 2022. Several joint initiatives followed in 2023, including a seminar on geographical indications held in Mexico, in which the INAO and the INPI participated, followed by technical exchanges in Querétaro with winegrowers. Querétaro was subsequently recognized in 2025 as Mexico’s first wine with a geographical indication.

An agreement with ambitious goals

This declaration of intent aims to:

- Strengthen technical cooperation and dialogue on the legal and institutional frameworks for GIs

- Encourage the exchange of best practices on GI registration, governance, and control systems

- Support producers, particularly in the wine sector, in developing GI initiatives

- Protect GIs at the national and international levels

It will lead to future joint initiatives, such as webinars and technical missions, to support the recognition of GIs at both the national and international levels.

This agreement sends a strong message in support of fair competition and the protection of intellectual property, which are key concerns in today’s globalized economy.
