Guides to help GDOs reflect on the sustainability of PDO and PGI wine and cider sectors
In a difficult economic context, and in order to adapt to contemporary challenges, in particular climate change, which is affecting all winegrowing regions, defense and management organizations (ODGs) need to strengthen their thinking to ensure the sustainability of their sign, in a global approach (economic, environmental and social). To support defense and management organizations (ODG), INAO bodies have prepared support guides dedicated to professionals.

The INAO and its professional bodies have invited the ODGs to take ownership of the issues surrounding the sustainability of wine and cider PDOs and PGIs, particularly with regard to changes in the practices implemented, while respecting the fundamentals of the various SIQOs.
The two proposed support guides have been validated by the comité national des appellations d'origine relatives aux vins et aux boissons alcoolisées, and spirit drinks, as well as by the comité national des indications géographiques protégées relatives aux vins et aux cidres.
They propose a method for developing a sustainable approach in three stages:

- Establish the situation report integrating sustainability using simple economic, environmental, climatic and social indicators
- Define a sustainable strategyidentifying the major subjects to be worked on and the levers for action, some of which may (or may not) be codified in the specifications
- Assure the monitoringand the conditions for continuous improvement of this strategy.
Through these tools, INAO wishes to support the adaptation of official signs of identification of quality and origin, to guarantee the sustainability and competitiveness of wine and cider PDOs and PGIs.
