Terres du Midi" wines recognized as PGI [ODG].
"Terres du Midi" wines are now officially recognized as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The PGI was registered on October 6, 2023 by the European Commission, giving it Europe-wide protection. This recognition enhances the practices developed by Midi winegrowers.
Assemblage wines in red, white and rosé
A still wine, Terres du Midi PGI is available in white, red or rosé. It revives the southern tradition of blended wines. The wines produced are marked by fruity aromas, the nature and intensity of which can vary according to the grape variety, the soil and climate conditions of the harvest and the winemaking technologies used. Red wines have a deep color, a fleshy, supple and harmonious structure, with notes of red fruit or spices. White wines exalt the freshness of white-fleshed fruit and citrus notes. Perfectly balanced rosé wines develop floral or red fruit aromas with varied, delicate color intensities.
The "Midi Viticole"
The Terres du Midi PGI owes its geographical contours to the "Midi Viticole". It includes four departments in the Occitanie region: Gard, Hérault, Aude, Pyrénées-Orientales and a few communes in Lozère. A veritable amphitheater organized in terraces and facing the Mediterranean Sea, the geographical area is a blend of three areas: mountains and high plateaus, foothills and intermediate plateaus, and finally, the coastal plain. The influence of the Mediterranean climate ensures optimal grape ripeness in an area well suited to vine-growing. This diversity of soils and authorized grape varieties, thanks to the experience and creativity of the winemakers, favors the preservation of primary aromas, with a remarkable aromatic, fruity or floral quality.
.Recognition for historic expertise
The fundamental values of the Terres du Midi PGI stem from its historical heritage. It was in 1907 that the notion of "Midi Viticole" became official with the recognition of the Confédération Générale des Vignerons du Midi. In this collective spirit of the Midi Viticole, cooperative wineries were built up in the first half of the 20th century. This network fostered the development of expertise in the production of blended wines. It is this specificity that today distinguishes the Terres du Midi PGI.
