A look back at the March 18, 2025 meeting of the Comité national des IGP relatives aux vins et aux cidres (national PGI wine and cider committee)
The National Committee for Protected Geographical Indications relating to wines and ciders on March 18, 2025 took key decisions for the future of winegrowing PGIs and their adaptation to economic and environmental challenges.
Partially dealcoholized wines in PGIs: the first applications have been validated
The Périgord, Comté Tolosan and Val de Loire PGIs now include the possibility of producing partially dealcoholized wines. This initiative responds to growing consumer demand for diversity, while guaranteeing compliance with PGI quality criteria. These strategic decisions testify to the Comité National des IGP's commitment to supporting the wine industry's transition towards innovative production that meets consumer expectations and economic challenges. For the record, in line with the decisions of previous national committees, the minimum alcohol content of these partially dealcoholized wines is 6 degrees.
Tightness between PDO and PGI segments: new rules to stabilize markets
In order to strengthen commercial balances and reason production volumes in line with markets, several specifications have revised their harvest declaration and claim procedures. Several PGIs, notably Drôme, Méditerranée and Var, have adopted a system for defining the maximum volume that can be claimed. This regulation will prevent excessive fluctuations in PGI supply and better structure the PGI wine market.
Adopting new varieties to cope with climate change
In a bid to adapt to new climatic conditions, several PGIs are continuing to integrate new disease- and drought-resistant grape varieties, notably the Méditerranée, Gascogne and Gers PGIs. This measure aims to reduce the use of phytosanitary products while guaranteeing a more stable and environmentally-friendly wine production.
The adoption of a method to strengthen the analysis of dossiers through the prism of sustainability
The Committee has validated a draft guide enabling Organismes de Défense et de Gestion (ODG) and investigation commissions to integrate the issue of sustainability into their reflections on the evolution of specifications.
This guide proposes a three-step methodology:
- Establish a situation report integrating sustainability on the basis of key economic, environmental and social indicators.
- Identify contemporary priority issues for PGIs and define measures to adapt to them collectively, and thus communicate better.
- Ensure continuous monitoring and improvement.
