Protection of Geographical Indications: INAO shares its experience with the Philippines
As part of the cooperation agreement signed with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines in July 2022, INAO carried out an on-site mission at the end of November 2022. The aim of this action was to support the Office in the operational implementation of the new local regulations for the protection of geographical indications (GIs), with the aim of establishing common bases of understanding in terms of geographical indications and their protection, whether French or Filipino.
The program was structured around a day of sharing French and European experience in examining registration applications and a field trip to work on the first GI project filed with the Office: the Guimaras Mango.
This fruit originating from an island in the Philippine archipelago is highly reputed for its quality, sold in the Philippines and also exported to Australia, Japan and Korea. The visits and exchanges with the various players enabled us to appreciate the specificity of the Guimaras Mango, notably through the know-how of the producers, and to reflect on the organization of the sector, traceability and the carrying out of controls, necessary to reinforce the protection of the GI.
This cooperation is set to continue in the coming months.
