The Comité national des IGP viticoles et cidricoles continues its work on adapting the wine industry
Meeting on March 17, 2026, the Comité national des indications géographiques protégées (IGP) relatives aux vins et aux cidres of the Institut national de l'origine et de la qualité (INAO) examined several files structuring the future of the industry.
Sustainability: operational tools for PGIs
The Committee was briefed on the progress of work relating to the sustainability of wine PGIs. The national committee's working group in conjunction with VINIGP has proposed a structured method and a simplified common base of indicators to support GDOs in defining and monitoring their commitments, in line with the three pillars of sustainability (environmental, economic and social).
This method should help GDOs project themselves into the future by identifying, on the basis of simple indicators, their main challenges and initiate a reflection on the actions to be taken to address them. This strategic reflection will notably help in the submission of solid draft specifications to the INAO.
An evolving sector in the face of climatic and economic challenges
Committee members were informed of the main developments in the "wine package", recently adopted at European level, aimed at adapting the wine framework to changes in the sector (changes in consumption, climatic hazards, new practices such as dealcoholization). A working group has been appointed to look into the regulatory evolution of dealcoholization.
This committee provided an opportunity to report on the reflections underway on the evolution of practices, particularly with regard to enrichment, which are starting with the aim of simplifying procedures and adapting to realities on the ground.
Vineyard innovation and adaptation
The CTPS's work on the naming of new vine varieties was presented, against a backdrop of the development of grape varieties that are more resistant to disease and better adapted to climate change, while ensuring legibility for consumers and the preservation of existing varieties.
In addition, the Committee examined requests for changes to specifications, notably for the "Périgord" PGI, aimed at integrating new varieties and supporting the adaptation of vineyards.
A collective dynamic at the service of PGIs
Through this work, INAO confirms its commitment to supporting wine-producing PGI sectors in their transitions, reconciling innovation, competitiveness and territorial enhancement.
