An update to the FAQ to help you better understand the new European regulation on GIs (EU Regulation 2024/1143)
Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 amended the European legal framework for geographical indications (PDO, PGI) for alcoholic beverages and agricultural products, as well as for traditional specialties guaranteed (TSG). Provisions regarding the labeling of products marketed under a GI will take effect on May 14, 2026. A FAQ section is available to help you better understand the current regulations.
In particular, clarifications are proposed regarding Article 37.5, which concerns the inclusion of the producer’s name on the labeling of products marketed under a GI. This provision takes effect on May 14, 2026.
To help protection and management organizations, in particular, better understand these regulations, the INAO and the relevant government agencies (the Ministry of Agriculture, DGCCRF) have prepared a FAQ that addresses frequently asked questions regarding the implementation of the provisions of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council of April 11, 2024, on geographical indications for wine, spirits, and agricultural products, as well as traditional specialties guaranteed and optional quality terms for agricultural products, amending Regulations (EU) No. 1308/2013, (EU) 2019/787 and (EU) 2019/1753 and repealing Regulation (EU) No. 1151/2012.

A notification template for the use of GI-protected products as ingredients
Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 provides in Article 27(2) for a notification requirement for producers of prepackaged food whose name (including in advertising) includes the name of a protected designation as a PGI or PDO with the producer group recognized for that PDO or PGI. A non-binding notification template is provided by the INAO.
Note that, as of now, notification is not yet required for French protection and management organizations.
