An emblematic product of Reunion Island

Reunion Island is at the origin of vanilla production, with the discovery of the manual flower fertilization process and the development of pod processing. An integral part of the landscape in the east of the island, the climatic conditions (rainfall and volcanic soils) have enabled this crop to develop for over 150 years.

Vanilla bean production on Reunion Island is traditional and has been passed down from generation to generation. Its recognition as a PGI thus consolidates the reputation of this historic know-how favored by a particularly propitious climatic situation.

"Fresh", "dry" or "frosted"

The specifications describe vanillas that are supple and present a beautiful oily appearance when they are "dry" or more rigid and shiny when they are "fresh". Vanilla beans can also be covered with vanillin crystals, to produce "frosted" vanilla. The reputation of "Vanille de l'île de la Réunion" rests above all on its unique aromatic bouquet, the fruit of the plant's perfect acclimatization on the volcanic slopes of the eastern part of the island and the mastery of the processes developed by the Réunionese.

Before being marketed, vanilla beans are packaged in various types of hermetically sealed, tamper-proof packaging to limit the loss of aromas and excessive drying.
