Experimentation procedures and innovation evaluation system (DEI) for agri-food PDOs

To meet contemporary challenges, and in particular to cope with climate change, technical innovation is essential. A directive from the Comité national des appellations d'origine laitières, agroalimentaires et forestières defines a framework and sets the terms for taking into account innovations and implementing experimental approaches in agri-food PDOs, while respecting their fundamentals.

As a result of the global changes affecting agricultural production but even more so appellations of origin, practices are rapidly evolving to adapt to contemporary challenges:

  • Protection against climatic hazards,
  • Development of agro-ecological practices,
  • Reduction of phytosanitary inputs,
  • Taking animal welfare into account,
  • Lowering greenhouse gas emissions...

Innovations are appearing and production systems are evolving. Faced with this real innovative effervescence, we need to ensure that the identity of products with a protected designation of origin, and in particular their link to the terroir, is respected, by allowing them to innovate while at the same time asserting the sign. It is therefore necessary to find the right balance between respect for the fundamentals and the possibility of innovation. It is therefore the aim of this directive to set out a framework for doing so.

.

The objectives of the directive are therefore :

  • Defining a framework for identifying the relevance and scope of new practices in agri-food PDOs
  • Guaranteeing respect for product identity
  • In the case of the Innovation Evaluation Scheme (IES), enabling products to claim PDO benefits
