A honey inspired by an iconic Picardy fragrance

"Picardy Linden Honey" is a honey produced by Apis mellifera bees from the nectar of the "small-leaved linden" tree. The hives are placed near the trees when they are in bloom. It is a light-colored monofloral honey that comes in either liquid or crystallized form with a uniform texture. It has a fresh, minty taste with a refreshing flavor. “Picardy Linden Honey” derives its distinctive character from the linden tree, an iconic tree of the Picardy forests. The species grows wild in Picardy; in fact, these are often referred to as wild linden trees. The etymology of Chantilly comes from the Latin “campus tiliae,” which means “fields of linden trees.”

A production with a long-standing reputation in Picardy

All stages of production, from setting up the hives to harvesting the supers, are carried out within the geographical area of the PGI, which covers the departments of Aisne, Oise, Somme, Pas-de-Calais, and Val-d’Oise. Characterized by the extensive forests of Picardy, the production of linden honey in this region dates back to the 18th century. This honey is mentioned in the 1770 *Dictionnaire portatif du commerce* under the name “yellow honey from Picardy,” among those from other regions deserving special recognition. This rich historical heritage, along with the efforts to promote “Picardy Linden Honey,” are now recognized by the PGI designation.

About Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)

The PGI is linked to a specific know-how. It identifies an agricultural product—whether raw or processed—whose quality, reputation, or other characteristics are linked to its geographic origin. At least one stage of the product’s production, processing, or preparation must take place within the defined geographical area. The PGI guarantees the product protection at both the national and European levels. Compliance with the PGI specifications is regularly monitored by independent bodies that are accredited and supervised by the government.
