Logos and labeling rules for SIQO products

To ensure that consumers are properly informed, the marketing of products under official signs of quality and origin (SIQO) implies compliance with the various regulations in force.

General labeling rules

General labeling rules for foodstuffs presented for sale naturally apply to SIQO products. In particular, they are governed by European Regulation (EU) n°1169/2011. They differ according to how products are packaged or presented (pre-packaged or not). These rules are specified on the website of the Direction générale de la concurrence, de la consommation et de la répression des fraudes (DGCCRF).

There are also sector-specific labeling regulations:
- Regulation on the common organization of the markets in agricultural products n°1308/2013 for wine
- Decree n°2012-655 of May 4, 2012 on the labeling and traceability of wine products and certain oenological practices
- Décret n°2007-628 du 27 avril 2007 relatif aux fromages et spécialités fromagères

Organic farming logos

The logo national AB has existed since 1985 and is owned by the French Ministry of Agriculture. While it enjoys a strong reputation in France, its use is nevertheless optional on products.

For the Eurofoil (Organic Agriculture), the logo's terms of use are defined by the règlement (UE) n°2018/848. The European organic logo is mandatory on all pre-packaged organic food products sold as such in the European Union. The words "certified by FR-BIO-XX" indicate the code of the certification body that inspected this product.

The INAO has also produced a labeling guide for organic products (PDF format / 779ko).

Rules specific to each product

In some cases, the specifications for a SIQO product may include special instructions for product packaging and labeling. It is therefore essential to carefully study the SIQO specifications you produce. For specific questions, you can get in touch with the organization of defense and management or the territorial delegation of the INAO concerned by your product.
