Burgundy-Franche-Comté, a region fully committed to SIQO production

Every year, the Observatoire Prospectif de l'Agriculture de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (OPA BFC) draws up an overview of regional agriculture. INAO was able to contribute to this detailed overview by drawing up a summary of agricultural production under official signs of quality and origin identification (SIQO) in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region, a land of agricultures where production under SIQO plays a consequent and sustainable role.

A panorama of the Region through the prism of the strength of the collective in agriculture

Burgundy Franche-Comté is a territory where agricultural production occupies a singular place, whether in terms of the surface area dedicated to it, the jobs it provides or its economic weight in the regional gross domestic product. With the theme "the strength of the collective in agriculture", the 2025 edition of OPA BFC set out to highlight the importance of collective initiatives in energizing the region. An ideal theme for INAO: SIQOs are in fact carried by organismes de défense et de gestion, groupings of professionals who draw up and implement a collectively developed specification.

In collaboration with the Direction régionale de l'Alimentation, de l'Agriculture et de la Forêt (DRAAF) Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, INAO has drawn up a summary of the state of SIQO in the Region, on page 90. This summary provides a better understanding of the role of SIQO agricultural products in creating value and securing supply chains and their operators on a regional scale.

SIQO are very present in the regional agricultural landscape

36% (8,600) of the Region's farms are involved in at least one SIQO production, compared to 27% nationally. In 2023, the Region counted183 products under SIQO (excluding AB). Among these 183 products, there were 116 Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs), followed by Red Labels (RLs) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs).

Burgundy-Franche-Comté stands out particularly for its dairy production, with 2,500 farms committed to a quality approach among the 3,893 farms producing milk. With the PDO "Comté", the Region notably holds the leading Protected Designation of Origin in France by volume, with67,218 tons produced in 2024.

More resilient farms under SIQO

While the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region experienced a decline in the number of farms between 2010 and 2020, farms producing under SIQO proved less vulnerable. Their number fell by7%, while the number of farms producing without SIQO dropped by 28% over the same period. This resilience is explained by the economic weight of SIQO production in the Region, which contributes to both the financial value of agricultural products and job creation both upstream and downstream.
