Video review of the symposium "INAO, 90 years at the service of French agriculture".

Wednesday, October 8, 2025, a symposium was organized at the initiative of MP Christophe Marion on the theme of "INAO, 90 years at the service of French agriculture". The event demonstrated the extent to which, thanks to the Institut national de l'origine et de la qualité, origin and quality identification signs have, at every key stage in their history, provided answers to the challenges of the day, in the light of a history of innovation and adaptation, a dynamic that continues to this day.

90 years of promoting agricultural and food heritage

The symposium was an opportunity to recall the major milestones in the history of the Signes d'Identification de la Qualité et de l'Origine (PDO, IGP, STG, Label Rouge, Agriculture biologique) and the Institute, and to question their future prospects. Researchers, legal experts and professionals shared their views on the Institute's unique governance model, and highlighted the modernity of this system in the contemporary context. They also recalled that this public policy concerns one in three French farms, and represents nearly 42 billion euros in annual sales, or 40% of French agricultural production sales.

At this meeting, a traveling exhibition about the Institute was unveiled. Tracing the history of SIQO and INAO, as well as their current challenges, it is about to embark on a tour of France, stopping off at emblematic sites of France's agricultural and food heritage.

Examining the Institute's future prospects: sustainability and innovation as compasses

The symposium was also an opportunity for strong exchanges around the actions to be taken collectively to respond to the current challenges impacting SIQOs: increasing market complexity, climate disruption, and changing societal expectations, all in a context of competition from private segmentation approaches (the "label jungle"), striking the right balance between maintaining their identity and the necessary adaptation.

INAO, a support force for all SIQO sectors

In close collaboration with research and professionals, INAO's professional bodies are working to formulate a clear, concerted and relevant response to these expectations. These contemporary challenges require SIQOs to be approached from the angle of sustainability - economic, social and environmental - while considering the constraints encountered by management and defense organizations (ODG).

These professional groups, behind each SIQO product, must design and implement changes to the rules governing production conditions. To this end, the Institute actively supports the industry in the reflection and implementation of innovations guaranteeing the sustainability of SIQO, while taking into account the fundamentals that led to their recognition. Mechanisms and tools are made available to GDOs to facilitate the opening up of specifications to strategic innovations.

Thinking about sustainability is essential to ensure the longevity and competitiveness of SIQOs, whose strength lies in their ability to meet the challenges of the present day.
