A Look Back at the "Assises de l'origine" Conference on Sustainability Held on October 17, 2025

The INAO, through its Aquitaine-Poitou-Charentes regional office, organized the “Assises de l’origine” conference on sustainability on October 17, 2025, in Bourcefranc-le-Chapus (Charente-Maritime). This event, centered on the theme “What are the future opportunities for sustainable SIQOs? ,” allowed the gathered quality and origin certification bodies (ODGs) to discuss the future prospects of quality and origin identification marks (SIQOs) in light of contemporary challenges

The event was organized in partnership with the ODGs for the “Huîtres Marennes-Oléron” PGI and the “Canard à foie gras du Sud-Ouest” PGI, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Chamber of Agriculture, the Coopération Agricole Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Food Agency (AANA), and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region.

A Conference for Key Stakeholders in the Aquitaine Region

The SIQOs face numerous challenges: volatile markets, increasingly severe climate change, shifting societal expectations… Ensuring the sustainability of production, through a comprehensive approach that encompasses the economy, the environment, climate, and social dimensions, is a critical issue for all SIQO-certified sectors, requiring the development of method-based compromises.

The “Assises de l’origine” conference was held within this framework and provided stakeholders in the Aquitaine region with a unique forum to explore together the challenges and opportunities of the future, as well as the means to address them. Represented at this event by its Aquitaine-Poitou-Charente delegation, the INAO is actively engaged on the ground and is adapting its procedures to ensure this transition while continuing to create value for products, regions, and sectors.

A program focused on the future of SIQO from a sustainability perspective

The Assises de l’Origine conference opened with a discussion of the following three major issues: adapting SIQO to climate change, SIQO as a driver of attractiveness, and the role of agrivoltaics. Catherine GRANDCLEMENT, a sociologist, researcher at EDF R&D, and associate researcher at i3-CRG (École Polytechnique), presented her study on agrivoltaics titled “The Landscape of Controversies.” Thierry FABIAN, a national inspector at the INAO, presented a summary of the report by the Scientific and Technical Commission. These presentations were followed by a roundtable discussion on the relationship between regions, transitions, and designations of origin.

The Marennes-Oléron Quality Chain Takes Center Stage

The afternoon featured a visit to the Cité de l’Huître in Marennes (Charente-Maritime), in the heart of Europe’s largest oyster-maturing marshland and the birthplace of the “Huîtres Marennes-Oléron” PGI. The industry professionals and stakeholders in attendance were able to explore the world of oyster farming as well as the initiatives implemented by the “Huîtres Marennes-Oléron” quality program to address contemporary challenges. The visit then concluded with a culinary competition and an awards ceremony.
