Discover the key figures for AOP and IGP dairy products in 2024

With 51 PDOs and 12 PGIs, dairy products account for a significant share of agri-food production bearing official quality and origin labels (SIQO). To help you better understand the economics of this sector, the National Council for Dairy Designations of Origin (CNAOL) and the INAO have compiled key information from 2024 into a comprehensive and informative publication.

In 2024, the volume of dairy products marketed under Geographical Indications (PDO and PGI) totaled 272,236 metric tons (including the new PGI designations “Cancoillotte ” and “Fresh Tome from Aubrac”) for estimated revenue of just over 3 billion euros excluding tax at the manufacturing–maturing stage. Sales volumes remained stable compared to 2023 (+0.7%). The GI-certified dairy products sector comprises 14,246 dairy farmers, 1,237 farm-based producers, 474 processing facilities, and 329 aging facilities.

A partnership between the INAO and the CNAOL

The INAO conducts an annual survey of dairy industry advocacy and management organizations regarding their production statistics. The CNAOL and the INAO process this data and analyze it by cross-referencing it with data from the INRAE’s Rural Data Observatory, the SSP’s annual dairy survey, and data from the IRI and Kantar Worldpanel surveys tracked by the CNIEL

Unveiled at the CNAOL general assembly, held on September 25 and 26 in Millau, the publication provides a comprehensive overview of the production and sales of dairy products with a geographical indication, as well as trends over several years. This edition also provides information on consumer trends.
