Placed under the theme "Terres et Territoires de Rhum", this third edition of the Mondial du Rhum will bring together producers, institutions, experts, economic decision-makers and international delegations around the major challenges facing the industry: agricultural sovereignty, ecological transition, development of territories, innovation, tourism and transmission of know-how.

At the heart of this partnership, INAO will contribute its expertise to the conference "Appellations AOC, IGP et certifications : Quel impact sur la valorisation mondiale des rhums?", organized on Wednesday June 10 at 4:30 pm and dedicated to the role of official signs of quality and origin in the development of the spirits industry. Against a backdrop of fierce global competition, appellations of origin and geographical indications represent a major strategic lever for protecting production, guaranteeing authenticity and boosting visibility on international markets.

GI rums: an important sector for the overseas territories

French overseas rums occupy a singular place in this dynamic. The AOC "Martinique", the GIs "rhum de la Guadeloupe", "rhum de La Réunion", "rhum de la Guyane", "rhum de la Baie du Galion", "rhum des Antilles Françaises"and"rhum des départements français d'outre-mer" embody the excellence of an industry deeply rooted in the French overseas territories. Heirs to a centuries-old agricultural history, these traditional or agricultural rums reflect the richness of French tropical terroirs, the specificity of cultivation or industrial practices, and the exacting standards of producers committed to internationally recognized quality processes.

The rum industry today represents a considerable economic, cultural and heritage weight for the overseas territories. Thousands of direct and indirect jobs depend on the cultivation of sugar cane, its processing into rum, spirit tourism and related activities. Beyond this economic dimension, envisaged through their sustainable development, AOC and GI rums also contribute to the cultural identity of the territories, their attractiveness to tourists and their international influence.

For the INAO, this presence is part of a commitment to dialogue with all players in the sector and to promoting French geographical indications in general and ultra-marine ones in particular.

The Institute affirms its commitment alongside producers and territories to support the international influence of French appellations and GIs and defend a demanding, sustainable and cultural vision of origin-based sectors.
