The INAO and the SIQOs: An Innovative System Since 1935

Created in 1935 to protect designations of origin against counterfeiting, the INAO is based on a unique governance model, founded on decisions made by professionals who serve on a volunteer basis within the Institute’s governing bodies, in collaboration with the government. Over time, this effective model of collaboration between professionals and public authorities has proven successful in ensuring the overall consistency of this policy, thereby promoting quality and creating value for national agricultural products.  Through peer-to-peer collaboration, the INAO has consistently supported the adaptation of SIQOs while creating value across an ever-wider range of products, regions, and sectors.

Addressing Major Contemporary Challenges

Against a backdrop of volatile markets, climate change, societal expectations, and consumers faced with a multitude of labels, the INAO committees have adopted strong strategic measures to adapt the specifications to current economic, climatic, and technical realities. As a result, the majority of specifications are now open to revision to prepare the sectors to meet these challenges through innovation.

This 2025 activity report highlights the numerous initiatives undertaken to achieve these objectives: developing ties with the research community, providing consumer information, and continuously improving the organization’s efficiency within a tight budgetary framework.

Faced with the many challenges of today and tomorrow, the SIQO system and the Institute that supports it are proving to be a key driver in ensuring the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of farms in France.
